WHAT MAKES AN EFFECTIVE OTS?
-Music helps make an effective OTS as it helps build up tension and also sets the tone of the scene.
-Lighting helps make an effective OTS as it creates a foreboding atmosphere that unsettles the the audience.
-Making characters seems isolated is effective as it gives the impression that they are alone and defenceless.
-Having a stereotypical young, blonde women in a OTS is effective as in the media they are stereotyped as being weak or innocent.

ils (Them) :
The opening sequence in 'THEM' has a lot of similarities to other horror films. For example the two people getting separated and a soon as this happens things go from bad to worse, the audience can feel this form the music that makes them very unsettled. The girl is alone in the middle of nowhere a its dark and starting to rain both she and the audience both have no idea what is outside this creates tension as neither her or the audience know what to is outside of the car putting the on edge. The Woman In Black:
In the opening title sequence of 'The Woman In Black' tension is built up by using unsettling music and is complimented by the little girls playing with their creepy looking dolls. Also, the music increases in volume as the girls walk towards the window that they proceed to jump out of. The music finally cuts out when the mum of the 3 children screams when she sees that they have jumped. This is because the absence of dialogue makes the music more tension building. At the end of the opening scene we get a slight view of what we assume is 'The Woman In Black'. This makes the audience want to continue watching the film so they can discover who this woman is and how she is related to what the children did. MW |
The Ring
In the opening title sequence of The Ring, the director uses false scares to trick the audience into feeling more scared than they are. An example of this is the scene were the main character (a blonde female) opens the fridge, the audience are expecting something to jump out but it doesn't. The dark colours in the background create a sense of mystery and unknown making the audience feel suspense and alerts the audience to the fact that somethings not right. MW AH |
